Parkdale Garage also stock Winter tyres... what they are and why you should be using them during the winter months?

There is a huge lack of awareness in the UK about winter tyres. Either motorists are not aware they exist or they think that the tyre can only be used during times of heavy snow or ice. In fact, drivers will benefit from using winter tyres on slush, ice, frost and even wet roads. In fact any time the temperature dips below +7 degrees centigrade, you’re better off on winter tyres.

Why? Unlike summer tyres (everyday standard tyres in the UK), winter tyres do not harden at lower temperatures. That means they give you a much better grip on the road and the ability to stop in a shorter distance, increasing your safety on the road. The rubber compound of a winter tyre is very different to a summer tyre. It is designed specifically to work in temperatures under +7 degrees centigrade. What happens to a summer tyre when the temperature drops is that the tyre compound loses its flexibility, making it less grippy in low temperatures. We'll be delighted to advise.

Wheel Alignment If your wheels are not aligned correctly you may experience: uneven or rapid tyre wear, drifting away from a straight line or a steering wheel that is not at the 12 o'clock position when driving straight. Having the wheel alignment checked regularly can improve your fuel economy. From £35 + V.A.T

Wheel Balance If your wheels are not balanced correctly you may experience vibrations in the steering wheel, seat or floorboards. You may also suffer unnecessary and inconsistent tyre wear. NB: Wheel balancing is not the same as wheel alignment. Wheel balancing from £10 + V.A.T

Tyre Tread Depth - The Law

Current UK tread depth legislation requires that car tyres must have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread in a continuous band throughout the central ¾ of the tread width and over the whole circumference of the tyre. To help drivers recognise when their tyres are nearing the legal limit, tyres are manufactured with tread wear indicators in the grooves. However, despite the law, it is universally recognised in the tyre industry that the legal limit is wholly insufficient to protect drivers in adverse driving conditions. Drivers are therefore recommended to consider replacing their tyres when the tread depth reaches 3mm.
